► (1710-96) Filósofo escocés. Fundó la llamada «escuela escocesa del sentido común». Afirmó la existencia del mundo exterior y del alma, frente a las tesis de Berkeley y Hume.

Filósofo escocés. Se desempeñó como pastor presbiteriano de 1737 a 1751. Sus extensos estudios sobre David Hume lo convencieron de que el escepticismo de este era falso, por ser incompatible con el sentido común. Según Reid, la conducta humana y la lengua corriente ofrecen pruebas abrumadoras de la realidad del mundo material y la existencia de un yo perdurable en cuanto sujeto de una experiencia mental siempre cambiante. Entre sus obras se cuentan Investigación sobre el entendimiento humano según los principios del sentido común (1764), Ensayos sobre las facultades intelectuales (1785), y Ensayos sobre las facultades activas (1788).
